Outlook: The Troy Invite is one of the biggest middle school meets in the state of Illinois and promises some exciting and intriguing matchups. Athletes race against their own grades only, so team scores here are not always fully indicative of a program’s overall strength.

In the girls’ 8th grade race, we expect an excellent battle. Madeleine Serur of AH Thomas enters as the favorite after a great track season, highlighted by a 2:17 in the 800m and a 5:08 mile. She competed at the Artman Invite, running 12:32 on a challenging course, and will be aiming to break 12:00 here. Josie Mueller of Morris has been having a breakout cross country season, already running 11:59 this year. Ranked 8th in the state, she will be looking to make a strong statement at Troy. Chloe Milton of St. Benedict makes her first trip to this meet to race against some of the best in the IESA. Milton was 4th on the 2A level at the IESA State Meet last fall and holds a PR of 11:37. Another contender is Haven Barwegen of Bishop McNamara, who could also challenge for the win. Barwegen’s PR is 11:59, which she ran last year to place 6th at the IESA State Meet on the 2A level, and she recently ran 12:05 to win her home invitational on Wednesday.

The girls’ 7th grade race will feature a strong contest between Julia Farley of Old Quarry, Chloe Crim of Troy, and Stella Ciccarelli of Mokena. Farley was 6th at the IESA 4A State Meet last fall with a time of 12:04. She recently won the Parkside Invite in 12:14 and looks ready to perform well here again. Crim actually beat Farley at the State Meet last fall, running 12:02 to finish 4th. Crim has won the 5th/6th grade race at the Troy Invite the past two years and will be looking for her third career win at this event. Ciccarelli, who placed 12th at the IESA State Meet last fall, had an excellent track season running a 5:22 1600m and will be looking to excel and potentially pull off the win.

The boys’ 8th grade race shapes up as an excellent showdown between Lucas Pfoutz of River Trails and Yebby Diedrich of Westview Hills. Pfoutz entered this season as the top-ranked boy in the state, but we have yet to see him compete in an FAT-timed contest for his school. This meet will give us our first real look at the 7th grader who has run 4:33 in the 1600m. Diedrich ran well at the Parkside Invite this past weekend, taking 3rd in 10:50. These two went 1-2 in last year’s 7th grade race in an excellent battle, and they’ll be looking to put on another great show here.
