ree

The first weekend of the season has arrived, and with it comes a slate of strong meets set for Saturday that will generate intrigue across the state. In this article, we break down the top invites on the schedule and highlight what to watch for on Saturday.

EIU Showdown

Boys Teams: 3A - #1 Plainfield North, #3 Downers Grove North, #21 Neuqua Valley; Bolingbrook, Highland Park, Algonquin (Jacobs)

Girls Teams: 3A - #17 Plainfield North, #18 Downers Grove North, #21 Naperville Central; Bolingbrook, Algonquin (Jacobs), Neuqua Valley

Boys Individuals: 3A - #1 Philip Cupial (Sr., Downers Grove North), #3 Thomas Czerwinski (Sr., Plainfield North), #4 Will Surratt (Sr., Downers Grove North), #7 Aidan Connors (Sr., Plainfield North)

Girls Individuals: 3A - #5 Marlie Czarniewski (Jr., Plainfield North), Macy Ermitage (So., Downers Grove North), #22 Tessa Russo (Sr., Plainfield North)

Outlook: You didn’t have to wait long for an explosive matchup, with some of the top tier 3A runners going at it in Charleston this weekend. On the boys side, 3A #1 Plainfield North and 3A #3 Downers Grove North will face off in their first of many matchups this fall. Both teams are top 20 in the nation at the start of the season and they will make this race worth watching. Both teams have impressive 1-2 punches, but DGN has a slight edge compared to PN. 3A #1 Philip Cupial and 3A #4 Will Surratt lead the Trojans up front, both of them are top 5 runners in Illinois right now. PN’s top two consists of 3A #3 Thomas Czerwinski and 3A #6 Aiden Connors who will look to thread the needle between Cupial and Surratt. Because it is so early in the season, any of these four could take the individual win. The chase pack is where PN starts to separate itself from DGN, with Gavin Hall, James Maso and Logan Dodson making up their chase pack. While DGN doesn’t lack in depth, with guys like Joshua Farrero  supporting their front runners, PN has the clear advantage. On the girls side, the same two teams will be competing for the team title. 3A #17 Plainfield North and 3A #18 Downers Grove North will go up against 3A #21 Naperville Central. PN has 3A #5 Marlie Czarnewski up front, she will go up against DGN’s number 1, 3A #6 Macy Ermitage, for the individual win. PN is further supported by 3A #22 Tessa Russo, who will be a strong number 2 for the Tigers. 3A #21 Naperville Central will have a strong pack who will be right ahead of the packs of PN and DGN, they will look to make a statement against two historically powerful programs.

Civic Memorial Twilight

Boys Teams: 2A - #4 Bethalto (Civic Memorial), #6 Marion, #16 Highland; Alton, Alton (Marquette), Carrollton, Granite City, Jerseyville (Jersey), Troy (Triad)

Girls Teams: Alton, Alton (Marquette), Bethalto (Civic Memorial), Carrollton, Granite City, Highland, Jerseyville (Jersey), Troy (Triad)

Boys Individuals: 2A - #3 Raphael Greer (Jr., Marion), #4 Gabriel Greer (Jr., Marion), #9 Max Weber (Sr., Bethalto [Civic Memorial]) 3A - Landon Harris (Jr., Granite City)

Outlook: an exciting matchup in the 2A division, 2A #4 Bethalto (Civic Memorial) and 2A #6 Marion are going to throw down at CM’s home course. Civic is coming off of an incredible track season, with key 800 guys like Tulio Zampieri and Glenn Collins stepping up their aerobic range big time. These two guys will be key members to CM’s pack, and it’s what makes them an elite team. Marion will put up a good fight, with the strongest 1-2 punch in 2A with 2A #3 Raphael Greer and 2A #4 Gabriel Greer. The Greer’s will likely look for a 1-2 finish, but they’ll see competition from 2A #9 Max Weber, who is looking to spearhead the first of many Civic Memorial wins. Weber is coming off of an incredible track season and he provides a strong lowstick presence for the Eagles. Landon Harris of Granite City is the defending champion of this event and meet record holder. The Granite City junior will look to make his mark here again with another win. On the girls side, there will be many athletes and teams that will be looking to make their marks here. This will be a fun showcase of southern Illinois talent and a great kickoff to the 2025 season.

Kane County Meet

High School Boys Teams: 3A - #18 Batavia; 2A - #14 Aurora (Marmion Academy), #15 Maple Park (Kaneland); Carpentersville (Dundee-Crown), Hampshire, St. Charles East, Wheaton (St. Francis), Geneva

High School Girls Teams: 3A - #6 Batavia; 2A - #4 Wheaton (St. Francis); Burlington Central, Carpentersville (Dundee-Crown), Hampshire, St. Charles East, Geneva

Middle School Boys Teams: #16 Batavia (Rotolo); Burlington Central, Batavia (Immanuel Lutheran), St. Charles (Thompson), Westfield Community, St. Charles (Wredling)

Middle School Girls Teams: #3 Batavia (Rotolo); Burlington Central, Batavia (Immanuel Lutheran), St. Charles (Thompson), Westfield Community, St. Charles (Wredling)

High School Boys Individuals: 3A - #17 Edward Polaski (Jr., Batavia), 2A - #6 Carson Kaiser

High School Girls Individuals: 3A - #7 Avery Hacker (Jr., Batavia), #15 Sofia Borter (Sr., Geneva); 2A - #4 Erin Hinsdale (Jr., Wheaton [St. Francis]), #5 Elena Mamminga (Jr., Wheaton [St. Francis]), #6 Margaret Andrzejewski (Sr., Wheaton [St. Francis])

Middle School Girls Individuals: #23 Sam Deane (8th, Batavia [Rotolo]), #24 Caitlyn Daniel (8th, St. Charles [Thompson])

Outlook: The first county championship on the dock for this season will be the Kane County meet and it’s got some serious competition. Batavia is looking to earn a sweep here, with both the boys and girls teams in positions to capture a win. The lady Bulldogs are currently sitting at 3A #6 and are one of the strongest teams in Illinois this year. They return every single member from their fifth place team. One of the top 2A teams, 2A #4 Wheaton (St. Francis) will be the only other team in contention with Batavia. The Batavia boys are also favored to win, but have a little bit tougher of a field. They are currently 3A #18, but 2A #14 and 2A #15, Aurora (Marmion Academy) and Maple Park (Kaneland), will be hot on their heels. The individual racing is going to light this meet up, with stars from all divisions facing off here in Kane County. On the girls side, 3A #7 Avery Hacker is the narrow favorite after her elite season last fall. She’s a top ten returning runner regardless of classification and it’ll be hard to deny her the win here. That being said, the contingent from Wheaton (St. Francis) brings three studs that will be tracking Hacker the whole race. WSF has 2A #4, #5 and #6 with Erin Hinsdale, Elena Mamminga, and Margaret Andrzejewski making up their front three. All three girls have the capability to compete for the win, but Hacker is still a tough runner to beat. 3A #15 Sofia Borter of Geneva is another runner who will likely run it up with the top group, she had an amazing track season and is looking for more on the grass. On the boys side, Edward Polaski of Batavia and Carson Kaiser of Kaneland will duke it out for the individual win. Both are young talents with huge upside coming into the season and they’ll be sure to put up an exciting race in their season opener.

Clinton Light It Up

Boys Teams: 2A - #9 Normal University, #20 Olney (Richland County); 1A - #7 Clinton, #11 Auburn, #15 Gillespie, #19 Downs (Tri-Valley), #25 Monticello; Argenta-Oreana, Bloomington (Central Catholic), Cerro Gordo-Bement, Delavan, Maroa-Forsyth, Moweaqua (Central A&M), Rochester, Shelbyville, Bloomington (Cornerstone Christian Academy), Decatur (Eisenhower/MacArthur), Decatur (St. Teresa), Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley, Heyworth, Mattoon, Niantic (Sangamon Valley), Stillman Valley, Sullivan, Tremont, Villa Grove, Quincy (Notre Dame), Rantoul, Warrensburg-Latham

Girls Teams: 2A - #5 Normal University, #9 Rochester, #10 Bloomington; 1A - #5 Shelbyville, #7 Pleasant Plains, #14 Delavan, #15 Monticello; Argenta-Oreana, Auburn, (Central Catholic), Cerro Gordo-Bement, Clinton, Downs (Tri-Valley), Mahomet-Seymour, Maroa-Forsyth, Moweaqua (Central A&M), Pontiac, Bloomington (Cornerstone Christian Academy), Decatur (Eisenhower/MacArthur), Decatur (St. Teresa), Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley, Heyworth, Mattoon, Niantic (Sangamon Valley), Stillman Valley, Sullivan, Olney (Richland County), Tremont, Villa Grove, Quincy (Notre Dame), Rantoul, Warrensburg-Latham

Boys Individuals: 2A - #13 Quaid Berger (So., Olney [Richland County]); 1A - Chaz Oberkfell (Sr., Gillespie), #5 Jonathan Iacobazzi (Sr., Sullivan), #7 Will Fuson (Sr., Cerro Gordo-Bement), #8 Corrie Green (Jr., Delavan), #21 James Baisden (Sr., Auburn)

Girls Individuals: 2A - #8 Natalie Bierbaum (Sr., Normal University); 1A - #7 Klaire Eighner (Sr., Maroa-Forsyth), #14 Tessa Bowers (Sr., Shelbyville), #18 Aubrey Peterson (So., Clinton), #19 Macie Owen (So., Monticello), #21 Adelin Bruce (Sr., Downs [Tri-Valley])

Outlook: The Clinton Light It Up Invite always delivers an incredible atmosphere, where athletes thrive on a course made up of finely cut grass, blacktop, and a track. Add in the high-level competition, and it’s no surprise that fast times are run here early in the season. On the boys’ side, Normal University enters as the team to beat, even against the pre-meet favorite. Ranked inside the Top 10 of the 2A classification, they’ll face a tough challenge from Richland County. The boys’ individual race will be one of the most anticipated of the day, with Chaz Oberkfell coming in as the favorite. Last year, he was upset by Will Fuson at this meet, and he’ll be hungry for redemption. The reigning 1A State Cross Country Champion, Oberkfell will look to continue his dominance into 2025. Expect Quaid Berger, Jonathan Iacobazzi, Will Fuson, and Corie Green to be in the lead pack early, all pushing Oberkfell for the win. The girls’ race looks just as exciting, with Normal University entering as the current favorite. They’ll be chased by Rochester, Bloomington, Shelbyville, and Pleasant Plains—all capable of winning on the right day. Last year, Natalie Bierbaum did not race here, and will not race here again this year. Klaire Eighner should be the favorite here with a real chance at the title. Defending champion Tessa Bowers will also be in the mix, looking to reassert herself after a tough track season and prove she’s still a contender.

McHenry County Meet

Boys Teams: 2A - #23 Crystal Lake Central, #24 Woodstock; Cary-Grove, Crystal Lake (Prairie Ridge), Crystal Lake South, Huntley, Johnsburg, Marengo, McHenry, Richmond-Burton, Woodstock North, Woodstock (Marian)

Girls Teams: 3A - #11 Huntley; 2A - #11 Crystal Lake Central, #12 Crystal Lake South, #19 Crystal Lake (Prairie Ridge), #25 Cary-Grove; Harvard, Johnsburg, Marengo, McHenry, Richmond-Burton, Woodstock, Woodstock North, Woodstock (Marian)

Boys Individuals: 2A - #1 Jameson Tenopir (Sr., Cary-Grove), #8 Ellery Shutt (Sr., Woodstock); 1A - #3 Grady Smith (So., Johnsburg)

Girls Individuals: 2A - #3 Emaline Foster (So., Crystal Lake [Prairie Ridge])

Outlook: While Emricson Park isn’t known for its fast times, you can be sure that there will be some good racing at the McHenry County meet. On the girls side, 3A #11 Huntley will look to capture an easy win. After some elite track times from Haley Rahmann and Cori Kilvinger, their lineup has beefed itself up considerably and they are now a terrifying team in the FVC. They won’t encounter much competition here, but 2A #11 Crystal Lake Central and 2A #12 Crystal Lake South will also look to display their speed in their season opener. On the boys side, it’ll be a 2A show, with 2A #23 Crystal Lake Central and 2A #24 Woodstock up front. Crystal Lake Central, in particular, is a team to pay attention to as they are running with 3 new runners in their top 7 and will be looking to impress with their shiny new lineup. The Huntley boys could also sneak into the top spot as they got 2 new freshmen, Joseph Sitler and Joseph Zawacki, that seriously bolstered their roster. Individually, it’ll be an Emaline Foster show on the girls side. The Prairie Ridge phenom is 2A #3 and won’t encounter much competition from anyone. There are a few Huntley girls, like Isabella Ciesla and Haley Rahmann, who could potentially chock it up with her, but she shouldn’t have any problems securing the win. On the boys side, it’ll be a fun matchup between 2A #1 Jameson Tenopir and 2A #8 Ellery Shutt. Tenopir is coming off of an elite track season, but Shutt always turns it up during the fall. It’ll be very interesting to see what kind of shape Shutt is in, he could very well walk away with a win. 1A #3 Grady Smith is in the field as well, he’ll be looking to put up a good performance against the two titans ahead of him.

Aurora City Meet

Boys Teams: 2A - #12 Aurora (Central Catholic); Aurora (Christian), Aurora East, Aurora (Metea Valley), Aurora (Waubonsie Valley), West Aurora

Girls Teams: Aurora (Christian), Aurora (Central Catholic), Aurora East, Aurora (Metea Valley), Aurora (Waubonsie Valley), West Aurora

Girls Individuals: 2A - #19 Cecila Hilby (Sr., Aurora Central Catholic)

Outlook: Aurora is primed and ready for an August meet. Many teams are using this as a season opener. On the boys side, Aurora Central Catholic should be poised for a dominant victory. Ben Bohr, John Reinbold, and Jack Swiatek lead their team, with strong times. Nathan Gehrmann of West Aurora will be searching to break up the Aurora Central Catholic squad and make his way on the podium. On the girls side Waubonsie Valley is situated first, with the rest of the field nipping at their heels. Cecilia Hilby, Mia Bertolini and Kaylee Russel are the favorites by PR and Cecilia Hilby’s 800 speed is something to look out for.

Harvest-Westminster Invite

Boys Teams: 1A - #16 Elgin (Harvest Christian Academy); Arlington Heights (St. Viator), Aurora (Illinois Math & Science Academy), Cary (Trinity Oaks Christian Academy), Des Plaines (Willows Academy), Lisle, Lombard (Montini), Norridge (Ridgewood)

Outlook: This first-year meet will feature three ranked individuals and two ranked teams. On the boys’ side, host school Harvest Christian Academy is the team to watch, entering the season ranked 16th in the state. They’ll be led by Luca Bryja, who is also the favorite to win the individual race. On the girls’ side, it should be smooth sailing for St. Viator in the team competition, but Montini will be an intriguing challenger. They’re led by superstar Sydney Gertsen, who is expected to dominate the individual race.

On the boys’ side, Lance Retz enters as the favorite in the individual race, while on the girls’ side, Molly Farrell is projected to take the title with teammate Madeline Fox not far behind. The Middle School portion will be a great opportunity for many teams and athletes to step up.

Boys Individuals: 3A - #14 Sam Hill (Jr., St. Charles North)

Girls Individuals: 3A - #11 Kara Glenn (So., St. Charles North)

Outlook: The Elgin City Classic has served as a solid opening meet for the Elgin schools and surrounding towns for years, and 2025 seems to be no different. The varsity girls race will be headlined by 3A #14 St. Charles North as they look to open up their season. Expect to see Kara Glenn, Gwen Hobson, and defending champion Julia Rodney out in front for the North Stars. Rodney covered the 2.98 mile course in 18:03 last season, followed by Hobson in 6th with a 19:27 opening mark. With the strides they made this track season, expect some solid first week times and a dominant team performance from St. Charles North. On the boy’s side, 3A #15 St. Charles North is favored to dominate the team race. Last year, they won with 57 points to Mundelein’s 104, and 4 / 5 scoring members will be returning. With Samuel Hill, Logan Hitchings, and solid 3-5 scorers coming off tremendous track seasons, the North Stars will again be the team to beat. Individually, look out for Hinsdale South’s Wojtek Gilarski, who placed third with a 15:36 last year, as well as Mundelein’s Elijah Mendoza, who dropped a 15:42 to take 4th. Either of these guys, as well as Hill or Hitchings could push for the win.

Outlook: The Mascoutah Kickoff brings together numerous high school and middle school programs from the southern sector of Illinois for a highly anticipated event. In the high school boys’ race, Pinckneyville enters as the favorite for the team title, coming into the season as one of the top-ranked 1A schools. Individually, the battle should come down to Landen Boman (Pinckneyville) and Caiden Cook (DuQuoin), both ranked 1A athletes. On the girls’ side, it’s expected to be the Anna-Jonesboro show, as they are heavy favorites for the team win. Look for AJ teammates Jadyn Gerardi and Aleah Box to push for a 1–2 finish.

Outlook: This meet once again shapes up to be a strong showcase for several Central Illinois teams. The boys’ field includes No. 2 Plainfield South, though they won’t be running their top seven athletes. That opens the door for Lincoln-Way Central, who are favored to claim the boys’ team title. Minooka’s Nico Cimino will also miss the meet due to injury, leaving the individual race as Bryce Counihan’s (Lincoln-Way Central) to lose. Still, Zach Born (Metamora) and Ben Gorsage (Washington) are capable of challenging for the win.

On the girls’ side, Minooka should comfortably secure the team victory. The performances of highly ranked 2A squads Normal West, Washington, and Bloomington will also be worth watching. Individually, the race is wide open, with several contenders in the mix: Natalie Nahs (Minooka), Renee Warren (Normal West), Avery Sommer (Mt. Zion), Sophia Ramirez (Washington), and Julie Bach (Normal West).
