Typically Track & Field fans will search through results from major invites to see what occurred this weekend. This article is aimed to give some shine to those meets you may have missed. This week saw a lot of action from small meets, so I went day by day and looked at some of the quad meets that saw the best results.
Tuesday
GLENBARD EAST tri meet
There were some solid field events across the board at GBE. Aiden Kolkmeyer of Yorkville jumped 6’ 1.5” in the high jump, which is almost an 8 inch PR from what he jumped 2 weeks ago. There is a little bit of doubt here, as he does have a very talented teammate who could’ve cleared 6’ 1.5” for him, and he also jumped a humble 5’ 7” just two days later. However, if it’s legit, Yorkville just got another weapon. Zechariah Morris of Glenbard North, in his long jump debut, jumped a whopping 22’ 5” to capture the win. Morris typically competes in the triple jump, so maybe this is a sign that he is branching out this season to maybe score some more points for the Panthers.
GBS quad
Glenbrook South ran their star sprinters in their quad meet on tuesday, and they had the winner in every single sprint event. Sophia Abraham took the win in the 50m with a hand time of 6.7, she then came back and went 1-2 with her teammate, Olivia Debotello, in the 200, both running 26.7. Debotello won the 300 with a 42.9, while Abraham took second with a 43.2. Glenbrook south ran their 4x4 without Abraham, and they were 4:23. I don’t have splits, but I think it’s safe to say that Abraham is dropping at least 5-6 seconds off of that relay time if she is added to the squad. Waubonsie Valley won the 4x800 with a 10:12 over Fremd in 10:15, both teams are ranked in the top 10, with WV at IL #7 and Fremd at IL #9.
Wednesday
Niles north quad
Returning All-state athlete, Carrissa Uy of Niles west had an impressive triple, she won the high jump, long jump and triple jump with some great marks. She jumped 5’ 2” in high, 18’ 4” in long, and 36’ 10” for triple. She is one of 6 girls over 18 feet in the long jump, she is currently IL #4. She also ranks in the top ten for the triple, sitting around IL #9. This was one of the best performances of the week, Uy looks like she could be a big threat in the team scoring.
Rolling Meadows Boys Quad
Owen Fors of Barrington had himself a day, throwing 53’ 4.25” for IL #11. His teammate, Jeff Kohanzo, threw 48’ 2.5”. Kohanzo ended up throwing 49’ 2.25 later that week, but this was a great performance from the Barrington throwers. Will Viken of Rolling Meadows cleared 15’ 6” in the pole vault with a convincing win. He was off of his PR of 15’ 10”, but he is consistently vaulting over 15 feet, which is always a good sign.
Rich Township JV Raptor Invite
IL #2 4x800 was set at this meet by none other than Orland Park Sandburg. They are known for their dominance in the distance relay, and this year looks to be no different. They ran 8:14 with a half varsity squad, they split their varisty between 2 relays. The other relay ran 8:20 and also would’ve been IL #2. Thankfully, splits were taken and posted, so we are able to see that the composite time sits around 8:08 for Sandburg. This is an impressive time to be running this early into the indoor season, and it means great things are going to come for the Eagles. Zachary Van Wyk of Chicago Christian steamrolled the 60mH with a respectable mark of 8.59.
Thursday
Lincoln Way West Triangular
Lincoln Way West dominated this meet, all of their event groups seem to be doing well. Joshua Veldman won the 60 over Austin Rowswell, 6.50 to 6.55. Both are from LWW and will be key sprinters for the Warriors this year. Ryan Stilglic of LWW cleared a tall 15’ 6.25” which was good enough for IL #5 in the pole vault. LWW also had Anthony Rokas clear 14’ 1.75”, with a little fine tuning, they could have a dynamic duo in Stilglic and Rokas. Lincoln Way East had the win in the triple jump in Tibet Okwen, he jumped an IL #13 43’ 7.75”.
Addison Trail tri
Lake Park obliterated the shot put, they went 1-2, with Rodrigo Gonzalez and Joseph Michelini. Gonzalez won with a toss of 53’ 5” and Michelini took second in 51’ 4.25”. Oluwadimilare Hassan of Fremd jumped a wild 44’ 11.75” in triple for win. He is currently IL #5 with this mark.
Friday
Proviso West Quad
William Landwer dominated the sprints, taking the win in both the 60 and the 200. He ran a wicked 6.91 in the 60 which is currently IL #5. He doubled back in the 200 to run 22.97 and also helped New Trier win the 4x2 in a 1:33.8. Downers Grove Distance opened up their season in the 1600, Grant Schroeder took first with a 4:21.5 for an IL #3 time. Philip Cupial was second in 4:25.3 and John Courtney was 3rd in 4:26.1. A total of 7 athletes ran under 4:30, 5 of them were from DGN. The distance squad also ran the 4x4 in 3:29.9 to beat Kenwood (3:33). DGN is now IL #4 in the 4x4. One last big performance from the night, Parrish Hartley jumped an impressive 22’ 9.25” for an IL #3 mark in the long jump.
HF Girls 5 team
Jordan Hamb of South Shore International took home the win in both the 60 and the 200. Her 60 title was closely contested by London Jarrett of Homewood Flossmoor, the final times being 7.85 to 7.86. Hamb also took the wins in the 60mH and the long jump, however neither mark was something to write home about for her. This meet was highlighted by the 4x4 performances, Minooka ran an IL #2 4:06.9 over HF who was IL #3 in 4:09.2. 7 of the top 10 IL times in the 4x4 were set either on Friday or Saturday, this meet was a big contributor to that. On the distance side, the 800 was hotly contested between Madison King of Joilet Central and Maya Ledesma of Minooka. King just narrowly beat Ledesma, 2:22 to 2:23. Ledesma is more of a long distance athlete, so a 2:23 this early is a very good time for the Iowa State Commit. There was a huge shot put throw from Dai’lynn Kellum of Bolingbrook, she threw a whopping 36’ 7” which is currently IL #8. Finally, IL #9 triple jump was set by Kylee Gardner of South Shore International, she jumped a ridiculous 36’ 10”.
Wheaton North Girls Quad
Courtney Clabough of Yorkville clobbered the field in the shot put, throwing a lethal 39’ 11.25”. She is tantalizingly close to joining the 40 foot club, she is also currently IL #3 with that mark. It was also a good day for pole vault, Wheaton North’s Emerson Smith and Megan Wozniak went 1 and 2 for the Falcons. Smith hitting 11’ 7.25” for an IL #4 mark and Wozniak clearing 11 feet for an IL #10 mark.
Saturday
Batavia Coed Open
Batavia Girls relays did not miss at this meet, they set 2 IL #1 times, with a 1:46.7 4x2 and a flaming 4:03.5 4x4. 2 of Batavia’s varsity cross country runners opened their seasons as well, Madeline Cassidy and Gwen Krodel ran the 1600, they ran 5:22 apiece. Once the rest of the Batavia distance squad starts running more often, I would expect this team to make the power rankings. Until then, they will sit right outside the top ten. Batavia continued its destruction with Abby Wirth triple jumping a 36’ 2” to take the win in triple. She is currently IL #10, it’s good to see that she can consistently jump over 36 feet. On the boys side, Mason Ellens stole the show in the sprints, taking wins in the 55 and the 200. He set an IL #10 time in the 200 of 22.53 with his win at Batavia. Gavin Pecor of Batavia shattered the shot put field with a monsterous throw of 53’ 9”, he is currently IL #8 in the shot.
Glenbard South Girls Quad
One event stood out above the rest, the 55mH hurdles had some jaw dropping times. Olivia Parker of Cary Grove took the win in 7.98 over Layla Brisbon of Oswego East in 8.11. Parker’s time is still pending verification, so there is a chance that something went wrong with the timing setup which would lead to an invalid performance. Brisbon’s time has been confirmed, and it is converted to an 8.80 6mH which would put her at IL #4.
Homewood Flossmoor Boys Quad
HF sprints were not messing around, they had the winner in 3 out of the 4 sprint events on Friday. Zion Morrison took the win in the 60, flattening the competition with a 6.91. Max Smith of Minooka was 2nd with a 7.04. Morrison came back to win the 60mH in an 8.29. 8.29 would be fast for anyone else, but for Morrison it’s just another day at work. Joaquin Jordan was the winner in the 200 and the 300, he won the 200 with a 22.81 and the 300 with a 36.64. Averi Smith of Neuqua Valley was a close second in the 300, running 36.70 for second. Edward Mason of Neuqua lowered his 400 season record, running 51.93 to take first. Cooper Bowman of Minooka left a crime scene on pole vault, winning by over 2 feet with a 15 foot vault. He is currently IL #7 in the vault.
St. Charles North Opener
Lake park’s dual throwers couldn’t get enough of winning, so they did it again. Joseph Michilinni took the win with a herculean 55 foot toss. He is currently IL #5 in the shot put. Michilini’s teammate, Rodrigo Gonzalez, was second in 52’ 6.25”.
