Recapping The Lakes Clash At The Colosseum Invite

Writer: Jackson SummyJackson Summy

It was an exciting weekend in Lake Villa at the Lakes Clash at the Colleseum Invitational. There was an absolute avalanche of top ten marks in Illinois set at this meet and today we are going to go over each event talking about the cool stuff these athletes accomplished this weekend.

60m

Neuqua Valley’s Daniel Robinson stays undefeated after steamrolling the competition in the 60 this weekend. He protected his spot at Illinois #3 with a new PR of 6.89. Oreoluwa Sobodu of Dundee Crown took second with a time of 7.06, which is currently Illinois #8. Shamar Wilson of Highland Park took 3rd with a 7.08 and Ken-Ye Pendleton, the sophomore from Grayslake Central, took 4th with a 7.09. Cameron Bates from Grayslake North took 5th from section 2 with a 7.11. Out of the sprint events (except for hurdles) this event was the most exciting race to watch and produced some top-tier results.

200m

Oreoluwa Sobodu returned from the 60 to take the win in the 200 with a time of 22.90. Sobodu is currently sitting at Illinois #12. He won by a comfortable .2 seconds over Plainfield South’s Anthony Vilcek (23.10). William Landwer from New Trier closely followed Vilcek with a 23.11. Plainfield South’s second representative, David Obadein, took 4th with a 23.15. Shamar Wilson of Highland Park took 5th with a 23.42. There were a couple of notable scratches, both Neuqua sprinters, Daniel Robinson and Cooper McGinnis, and Grayslake North’s Cameron Bates did not run. Even though some of the firepower that was expected didn’t show, the 200 was still a quality race with some quality times.

400m

Evanston had the individual champ in Dallas Amos, who ran an Illinois #9 time of 51.28. Rajan Anthony took a close second with a 51.66. Jonathan Lapidus of Grayslake Central and Averi Smith were the only 2 other athletes under 53, with a 52.44 for Lapidus and 52.88 for Smith.

800m

The results suggest that this race wasn’t quite as exciting as it was hyped up to be, but that’s not exactly true. A crowded final heat led to some exciting racing and this race was a nail-biter the whole way. Owen Horeni of Yorkville took home the win in a narrow finish over Jackson Summy of Lakes. Horeni led the entire race and was able to hold off Summy at the finish to run an Illinois #3 time of 1:58.71 over Summy’s #4 time of 1:58.74. Jameson Tenopir took 3rd with an Illinois #10 mark of 1:59.66. Royce Krush of Glenbard North took 4th with a time of 1:59.86 and Maxx Haas of Fox Lake took 5th with a 2:00.24. There were 9 athletes within 2 seconds of each other, and the last lap was a scramble to get in a position to win. It’s pretty rare when the distance events are closer than the sprints, and whenever it happens, it’s always a fun race to watch.

1600

In another close race, Plainfield South came away with a 1-2 finish in sophomores Alex Batsala and Dylan Buturusis. Batsala and Buturusis were joined by 3rd place Quinn Davis of Prospect. All 3 ran 4:28, with Buturusis leaning Davis out by only .02 seconds. Joey Papanicholas of New Trier made an impressive last lap surge to try and work up to the top 3, but ended up in a close 4th with a 4:29.6. Blake Salbilla of Lakes grabbed a huge PR to take 5th with a 4:34.3. Once again, a close race in the final heat lead to some electrifying moves and fast times.

3200

Unlike the other distance events, this race was not close at all. Ben Crane put his foot down within the first 200 meters and did not let up throughout the race. He ran a 9:00.01, excruciatingly close to that 9-minute barrier, to take the win and set an Illinois #1 time and a US #4 time. The real race was behind Crane. Evan Nosek of Kaneland and Simon Lane of Chicago University made their move around 600 to go, they separated from the other 3. Lane made a wicked final surge to take 2nd with another big PR of 9:18. Nosek fell back a little to take 3rd with a 9:24. Carson Kaiser of Kaneland took 4th with a 9:25, which is the #1 3200 freshman time in the entire country. Evan Parker of Niles North followed Kaiser by a few seconds, running 9:33 to take 5th. Ellery Shutt of Woodstock raced the leaders as long as he could and finished 6th with a 9:42 for an Illinois #7 time. Easily the fastest race of the day, the Lakes’ 2-mile never fails to put up insane times.

60mH

The most electric race out of the sprints, the hurdles saw some huge times. Cooper McGinnis of Neuqua took the dub with a blistering Illinois #2 time of 8.15. William Landwer of New Trier took a close second with an 8.22, which sits at Illinois #3. These 2 were a comfortable .18 seconds ahead of everyone else. 3rd place went to Nathan Circhy of Prospect in 8.39, 4th place went to Brandon Marks of Antioch with an 8.47, and 5th went to Thomas Simmons of Stevenson with a time of 8.58.

4x200m

The winner came from section 3 out of 4, with Grayslake Central’s squad of Rashad Smith, Everett Ciokaijlo, Isaiah Allen, and Ken-Ye Pendleton, taking home the gold in 1:34.66. Evanston took 2nd place with an Illinois #10 time of 1:35.76. Kaneland came out and destroyed their seed time of 1:37.5, dropping Illinois #11 with a 3rd-place finish in 1:36.03. Some outstanding performances from some underdog teams led to a great race and some solid times.

4x400m

The 2 squads from Evanston and Yorkville battled it out the whole way, but Evanston ended up on top with a time of 3:34.40 to Yorkville’s 3:34.72. Evanston's squad of Deshawn Preister, Milo Porter, Dallas Amos and Ryan Rice are currently Illinois #5 and Yorkville’s quartet of Raymond Brigman, Ben Kozial, Logan Reuter and Owen Horeni sit at #6. Neuqua Valley took 3rd with a time of 3:36.09, narrowly beating Chicago Lane who ran 3:36.15.

4x800m

Not exactly a close race, Lakes led for most of the race and won with an Illinois #2 time of 8:20. South Elgin tried to work their way back into it on the last leg, but were unable to catch the Eagles, they took 2nd with an 8:24, which is currently Illinois #3. Plainfield South took 3rd with their B-squad, running 8:27 for Illinois #5.

Long Jump

Daniel Robinson captured his second win of the day in the long jump, leaping 21’ 6.75”. He was a spacious 6 inches over second place Alexander Moser of Stevenson, who jumped 20’ 11.75”. There was a tie for 3rd place between Warren’s Jakobe Jones-Tolbert and South Elgin, De’Angelo McCullough, both jumped 20’ 11.25”. Nick Flaugher of Prairie Ridge took 5th in his long jump debut with a jump of 20’ 7.75”

Triple Jump

A huge final attempt from De’Angelo McCullough landed him the win, he jumped 44’ 7” which is currently Illinois #4. Patrik Dortch of Lakes took 2nd with a leap of 42’ 11.5”, he was closely followed by Dylan Benjamin of New Trier in 42’ 7”. 4th place went to Nick Flaugher of Prairie Ridge with a jump of 42’ 1.25” and 5th place went to Michael Gorelick with a jump of 41’ 9.75”

High Jump

Easily the biggest field event of the day, 4 people set the Illinois #1 standard of 6’ 6”. Michael Gorelick was the first to clear 6’ 6”, and the senior from New Trier cleared this 4-inch PR on his first attempt. He was closely followed by Taelor Clements of Yorkville and Khristos Oludimo of Jacobs, who both cleared on their second attempt. Then, out of flight 2, in his high jump DEBUT, Ademide Adegboyega leaped to 6’ 6” on his second attempt as well. He actually had to scratch the 400m because he went so far on the high jump, that it ended up running through the 400. Eli Hagstrom of Warren and Charles Hayes of New Trier both jumped 6’ 2”, Hagstrom setting a 4-inch PR. Hayes, although way off of his PR of 6’ 5”, is currently tied for Illinois #8 with Hagstrom. There were some huge marks from familiar faces and new faces, the high jump was a hot event this weekend.

Shot Put

Enijel Shelton was the heavy favorite going into this weekend, after throwing a monumental 55’ 5.5” the week before. He won with a toss of 51’ 4.25” over Jordan Phelan of Lakes, who threw 2nd place in 48’ 5.25”. 3rd place went to Jordan Patterson, he threw down a 47’ 6.25’ for a nearly 7 foot PR. Nickolas Grigsby and Nathan Culpepper of Plainfield South took 4th and 5th respectfully, both throwing over 45 feet.

Pole Vault

In his first meet back from a season-ending injury, William Mercure of Lakes took the win with a vault of 14’ flat. Oliver Neuenschwander of New Trier took second, also clearing 14’ but on his second attempt. Zane Smith of Grayslake Central took 3rd with a vault of 13’ 5.75”, which he cleared on his 1st attempt. Kyle Rogers of Kaneland took 4th, also vaulting 13’ 5.75”, but on his 2nd attempt. Dylan Gates of Lakes took 5th with almost a foot and a half PR of 12’ 11.75”.

Team Scoring

New Trier took home the team title with 66 points, William Landwer, Ben Crane, and their 2 high jumpers being the key contributors to their success. Lakes and Neuqua Valley tied for second place with 56 points. Neuqua had some major success in the sprints, major points from the 400m, and having Daniel Robinson winning both the 60m and long jump definitely helped. Lakes’ field events had a phenomenal day, with 2nd place finishes in the triple jump and shot put, and a win plus 5th place in the pole vault. Their distance squad also went to work, taking home the 4x8 title, second place in the 800, and a 5th place in the 1600. Evanston and Plainfield South tied for 4th, Evanston scoring big in the sprint events and shot put, Plainfield South scoring in pretty much everything, but definitely some big help from their 1-2 finish in the 1600.
