Top 10 Athletes To Watch At The PSHS Cougar Invite

We are now approaching three weeks into the 2025 track and field season. There have already been some stellar performances and there is no sign of slowing down. This Saturday will be the annual Plainfield South Boys Invitational meet. There are many top athletes competing here and it will be a spectacle to see these top athletes move around this 178m track. 



1. Dylan Maloney (Sr., Plainfield South)

Events: 3200m

Maloney is senior at Plainfield South High school and will be a key athlete to look out for this Saturday. Maloney currently holds impressive PRs of 4:14 in the 1600m and 9:03 in the 3200m, both of these coming from the IHSA State Track and Field Championships. This past cross country season he placed 5th at the IHSA 3A State cross country championships and 12th at the foot locker Midwest regional. He recently opened his 2025 Track and field season with a 9:21 two mile race at the CYUP Misfits invite. Can he run faster than that here?


2. Aiden Swanlund (Sr., Normal West)

Events: 800m and 4x800m

Swanlund, a senior at Normal West high school is a key middle/distance athlete to look out for this weekend. He currently holds PRs of 1:56 in the 800m and 4:29 in the 1600m, that actually came from a double at the big 12 conference championships. He also holds a blistering relay split of 1:52 in the 4x800m relay; this performance came from the 2024 IHSA track and field state championships. He has yet to open his 2025 track and field season, so it will be exciting what he puts up. 


3. Joe Owusu (Jr., Plainfield East)

Events: 55m

Owusu, a junior at Plainfield east high school will be a key sprinter to be on the lookout for this weekend at Plainfield South. Joe holds PRs of 10.83 in the 100m and 22.93 in the 200m. The 200m of which he ran at the AAU region 13 national qualifier, this qualified him to the AAU junior olympic games. He is also another athlete to have yet to open the 2025 track and field season. It will be interesting to see how he performs this weekend. 


4. Justin Lubelfeld (Jr., Deerfield)

Events: High Jump, Long Jump, Triple Jump

Lubelfeld is a junior from Deerfield high school and a key jumper to look out for this weekend. He holds PRs of 5.94m in the Long Jump, 12.47m in the Triple Jump. as well as a  soaring 1.93m in the high jump which he accomplished at the Jerry Lowe Invite 2 weeks ago. It will be a real spectacle to see how he performs this Saturday in the jumps. 


5. Dylan Buturusis (So., Plainfield South)

Events: 800m

Buturisis is a sophomore at Plainfield South and is another middle/distance athlete to be on the lookout for this Saturday. Dylan is coming off quite the sophomore cross country season with some very impressive performances. These include his sub 15-minute clocking in the 3 mile that he achieved at the Southwest Prairie Conference Championships, as well as his solid race at the IHSA 3A State cross country championships. He recently opened his 2025 track and field season quite strong taking 2nd place in the 1600m at the Lakes Clash at The Colosseum, losing only to his fellow sophomore teammate Alex Batsala. 


6. Alex Batsala (So., Plainfield South)

Events: 800m

Speaking of Batsala, while not being related by blood, his and Buturusis bond is evident by their racing. Over the last year, they have rarely been far apart in a race and you can expect the same this week for the duo. Batsala is coming off a win at the Lakes Clash At The Colosseum Meet in the 1600m and will be looking to follow that up with a great performance in the 800m here.


7. David Obadein (Sr., Plainfield South)

Events: 55m, 4x200m, 4x400m

Obadein is a senior at Plainfield south and will be among the top sprinters to keep an eye on this weekend. David Obadein’s PRs consist of 6.64 in the 55m dash, 22.59 for the 200m and 52.84 for the indoor 400m. David recently opened his season at the Lakes Clash at The Coliseum meet on February 15th with performances of 7.15 in 60m dash and 23.15 in the 200m. 


8. Anthony Vilcek (Sr., Plainfield South)

Events: 55m, 4x200m, 4x400m

Vilcek, a senior at Plainfield South high school is one of the final sprinters to watch out for on Saturday. Much like the dynamic between Buturusis and Batsala, him and Obadein are right there with each other every race. Vilcek has some solid performances to his name, Anthony Vilcek holds PRs of 22.44 in the 2000m and 11.46 in the 100m. He also recently opened his season at the Lakes Clash at The Colosseum meet producing performances of 7.22 in the 60m and 23.10 in the 200m. 


9. Harrison Erdman (Sr., Deerfield)

Events: High Jump, Long Jump, Triple Jump

Erdman is a senior at Deerfield high school and is the other key jumper to watch out for this weekend at Plainfield South. Erdman holds PRs of 1.90m in the high jump, 6.46m in the long jump, as well as a show stopping 13.46m in the triple jump. He jumped 13.44m jump at the IHSA State track and field meet during the 2024 season. He opened up his season at the Jerry Lowe Invite jumping 1.78m in the high jump, 13.05m in the triple jump and 6.17m in the long jump.


10. WIll Yacullo (Sr., Benet Academy)

Events: 55m, 55H, 200m, 4x200m

Yacullo is a senior Hurdler at Benet Academy. Yacullo hold PRs of 8.86 in the 60m hurdles, and 15.12 in the 110m hurdles as well as 40.73 in the 300m hurdles. He has yet to open his 2025 track and field season but it will be a show to see what he puts up on the board this weekend.
