Girls Individual Preview

The IHSA Class 1A Girls Cross Country State Championship will feature one of the nation's premier distance runners, as Isabella Keller of St. Anthony enters Detweiller Park as the overwhelming favorite to capture another individual state title. Despite missing the entire track season while recovering from surgery, Keller has returned to competition in remarkable fashion and remains undefeated against Illinois competition this fall. While Keller appears to be in a class of her own, the battle for second place could be one of the most competitive races of the weekend. Kasyn Jibben, Haven Barwegen, Dusti Smith, Aubrey Denning, and Jana Vande Kemp headline a talented group of contenders looking to secure a runner-up finish. With several returning All-State athletes, talented newcomers, and experienced track standouts in the field, the race for the remaining top-ten positions promises to deliver plenty of excitement.

All eyes will be on Isabella Keller (Sr., Effingham St. Anthony), who enters Saturday with an opportunity to add another chapter to an already legendary high school distance running career. Keller missed the entire track season following surgery and has only been back running for a few months, yet she has wasted little time returning to elite form. The St. Anthony senior remains undefeated against Illinois athletes this fall and delivered one of the most impressive performances of the season when she finished runner-up at Nike XC Town Twilight in 17:04. Keller has established herself as one of the nation's best distance runners, finishing fourth at Nike Cross Nationals last year after placing eighth at the national championship in 2023. At the IHSA State Meet, Keller captured the individual cross country championship in 2023 before finishing runner-up in both 2024 and last year. She has also enjoyed tremendous success on the track, winning the 3200m state championship in both 2024 and 2025 while finishing second in the 1600m in 2024. With her championship experience and impressive return to competition, Keller enters as the clear favorite and could challenge the Class 1A State Meet record of 15:59.4, set by Kate Foltz in 2024.

While Keller enters as the overwhelming favorite, Kasyn Jibben (So., Havana) has established herself as one of the leading contenders for second place. The Havana sophomore has enjoyed an outstanding fall, suffering only two defeats throughout the season while collecting victories at the Clinton Light It Up Invitational and Patriot Invitational. Jibben has demonstrated the ability to compete against strong fields and consistently position herself near the front of races. She also brings valuable championship experience from the track, where she finished sixth in the 3200m at the State Championships. With her impressive regular season and continued success throughout the postseason, Jibben has positioned herself as a legitimate threat to capture the runner-up position at Detweiller Park.

One of the most exciting newcomers in the field is Haven Barwegen (Fr., Kankakee McNamara), who has put together a remarkable freshman campaign. Barwegen enters the State Meet undefeated, having quickly established herself as one of the top distance runners in Class 1A. Her season has been highlighted by a victory at the Lisle Mane Event, and she has continued to dominate throughout the postseason. Barwegen arrived at the high school level with an impressive middle school track background, having run 2:22 in the 800m and 5:16 in the 1600m. Her ability to make an immediate impact against experienced high school competition has been one of the biggest stories of the season. Although Saturday will mark her first high school State Cross Country Meet, Barwegen has already proven she belongs among the best in the classification and could challenge for a runner-up finish.

Another athlete with the experience and talent to finish second is Dusti Smith (Sr., Toulon Stark County). The Stark County senior has enjoyed an impressive final cross country season, finishing runner-up at the First to the Finish Invitational before capturing the individual title at the Elmwood Invitational. She also finished second at the Patriot Invitational, continuing to demonstrate her ability to compete against some of the top runners in Class 1A. Smith finished tenth at last year's Cross Country State Championships and brings an impressive track background into Saturday's race. She ran 5:00 in the 1600m last year and anchored Stark County to a state championship in the 4x800m relay. With her combination of championship experience, middle-distance speed, and consistent performances throughout the fall, Smith has the potential to improve significantly upon last year's State Meet finish and challenge for the runner-up position.

St. Anthony could have two athletes battling near the very front of the race, as Aubrey Denning (Sr., Effingham St. Anthony) enters as another leading contender for second place. Denning has been outstanding throughout her senior season, with her only defeat coming against teammate Keller. The St. Anthony senior has already established herself as one of the top distance runners in the classification, finishing eighth at the 2024 Cross Country State Championships and 13th last year. Her track résumé is equally impressive, highlighted by a third-place finish in the 800m and sixth-place finish in the 1600m at last year's State Championships. She also finished fourth in the 800m and fifth in the 1600m in 2025, with personal bests of 2:12 and 5:01 in those events. With Keller expected to lead the field, Denning has an opportunity to give St. Anthony an incredible one-two finish at the State Meet.

Jana Vande Kemp (Sr., Cambridge) is another athlete who has positioned herself as a serious contender for the runner-up spot. The Cambridge senior has enjoyed a strong fall, finishing second at the Elmwood Invitational and third at the Patriot Invitational before capturing the Lincoln Trail Conference championship, where she defeated fellow contender Dusti Smith. Vande Kemp has steadily improved throughout her high school career, finishing 23rd at the 2024 Cross Country State Championships before moving up to 20th last year. She also brings significant track experience, having finished eighth in the 3200m at last year's State Meet while helping Cambridge place third in the 4x800m relay at both the 2024 and 2025 State Championships. With her ability to compete against some of the top runners in the classification, Vande Kemp has the potential to make another significant jump and contend for a podium finish.

One of the biggest wildcards in Saturday's race is Klarke Goranson (Jr., Manteno), who has battled through an injury-interrupted season but possesses the talent to finish among the top five. Goranson missed a significant portion of the fall due to a stress injury, limiting her opportunities to compete. However, she has returned to racing and finished runner-up to Haven Barwegen at both the regional and sectional championships. Goranson finished 12th at last year's Cross Country State Championships and has an outstanding track résumé from competing in Class 2A. She finished fifth in both the 800m and 1600m at last year's State Meet after placing second in the 800m and third in the 1600m in 2025. Her personal bests of 2:11 in the 800m and 4:50 in the 1600m demonstrate the level of talent she brings to the field. If Goranson can return to her best form, she has the ability to challenge the leading contenders and potentially finish inside the top five.

The competition for the remaining top-ten positions will be extremely competitive, with Lydia Woody (So., Springfield Lutheran) emerging as one of the athletes capable of making a significant jump this season. Woody finished third at both the Clinton Light It Up Invitational and Rochester Invitational before establishing herself as one of the top runners in her area. Over the past several weeks, she has consistently finished runner-up to Kasyn Jibben, demonstrating her ability to compete against one of the leading contenders in the field. Woody did not earn All-State honors in either cross country or track and field during her freshman season, but her improvement this fall has put her in position to change that. A top-ten finish would represent a major breakthrough for the Springfield Lutheran sophomore.

Another athlete looking to make an impact near the front is Emalyn Millar (Jr., Aledo Mercer County). Millar has put together a consistent season, finishing third at the Dale Donner Invitational, second at the Amboy Invitational, and fifth at the Patriot Invitational. She has continued to perform well during the postseason, placing third at both the regional and sectional championships. Millar also brings experience from the State Track and Field Championships, where she helped Mercer County finish sixth in the 4x800m relay last year. With her ability to consistently finish near the front of competitive fields, Millar has positioned herself as a legitimate contender for a top-ten finish.

Joelle Wilson (Sr., Williamsville) enters Saturday with unfinished business after narrowly missing All-State honors a year ago. Wilson finished 26th at last year's Cross Country State Championships, just one position outside the All-State cutoff, and will be looking to make sure that does not happen again. The Williamsville senior has enjoyed an impressive final season, finishing fifth at the First to the Finish Invitational, fourth at the Spartan Classic, and second at the Dan Moy Invitational before capturing the Williamsville Regional championship. Wilson also brings impressive middle-distance speed, having run 2:16 in the 800m and finished eighth in the event at last year's Class 2A State Track and Field Championships. With her championship experience and strong performances throughout the fall, Wilson has the opportunity to move well inside the All-State positions and challenge for a top-ten finish.

Few athletes in the field have as much State Meet experience as Madeleine Fox (Sr., Marshall), who will be looking to close out her high school cross country career with another outstanding performance. Fox has earned All-State honors in each of her previous three appearances at Detweiller Park, finishing 17th in 2023, ninth in 2024, and 16th last year. She has also enjoyed considerable success on the track, including fifth in the 800m, eighth in the 1600m, and seventh in the 4x400m at the 2025 State Championships. Fox owns personal bests of 2:15 in the 800m and 5:06 in the 1600m, giving her the speed needed to compete with the top runners in the field. This fall, Fox won the Doc Acklin Invitational before finishing eighth at First to the Finish, ninth at the Spartan Classic, and eighth at the Patriot Invitational. She also captured the Cumberland Regional championship. With three previous All-State finishes and a proven ability to perform on the biggest stage, Fox has the experience to challenge for another top-ten finish.

Leah Shoaff (So., Shelbyville) will be looking to make a significant individual impact while also helping lead Shelbyville's pursuit of the team state championship. Shoaff has been one of the top runners in Class 1A throughout the fall, finishing second at the Clinton Light It Up Invitational before collecting victories at the Charleston Invitational and Shelbyville Trail Invitational. She also finished third at the Spartan Classic and fourth at the Patriot Invitational. Shoaff narrowly missed All-State honors during her freshman season, placing 27th at last year's State Championships. She followed that performance with a ninth-place finish in the 3200m at the State Track and Field Championships and also contributed to Shelbyville's success in the 4x400m relay. With another year of experience and an impressive sophomore campaign behind her, Shoaff has the opportunity to move into the top ten while providing valuable low points for Shelbyville in the team championship race.

Another athlete who could surprise some people with a top-ten finish is Audrey Dickinson (So., Glasford Illini Bluffs). Dickinson has been running some of her best races of the season over the past several weeks, putting herself in position to make a significant impact at Detweiller Park. The Illini Bluffs sophomore finished 24th at last year's Cross Country State Championships and has since established herself as one of the top middle-distance runners in the classification. She finished second in the 800m and fifth in the 1600m at last year's State Track and Field Championships, with personal bests of 2:14 and 4:57 in those events. Dickinson's impressive track credentials and recent improvement make her a dangerous competitor, particularly if she can remain within striking distance of the leading group throughout the race.

Girls Team Preview

The battle for the IHSA Class 1A Girls Cross Country State Championship is shaping up to be one of the most exciting team races of the weekend, with Shelbyville and Eureka entering as the co-favorites to capture the title. Shelbyville has been nearly unstoppable throughout the fall, entering Detweiller Park undefeated and looking to improve upon last year's runner-up finish. Eureka, meanwhile, has put together an outstanding season of its own, highlighted by a victory at the First to the Finish Invitational and a pair of postseason championships. Behind the two favorites, Elmwood, El Paso-Gridley, Anna-Jonesboro, and defending state champion Winnebago are all capable of making a run at the final trophy position. With several teams separated by narrow margins, the race for a spot on the podium could come down to the final scoring runners.

Shelbyville enters Saturday as one of the two favorites to capture the Class 1A State Championship after putting together a perfect season. The Rams have yet to suffer a defeat this fall, collecting victories at the Clinton Light It Up Invitational, Charleston Invitational, Spartan Classic, and Patriot Invitational before sweeping both the regional and sectional championships. After finishing runner-up at last year's State Meet, Shelbyville has its sights set on taking the final step and bringing home the championship trophy. Leading the charge is Leah Shoaff, who gives the Rams a legitimate front-runner capable of scoring very few points. Behind Shoaff, Shelbyville features an outstanding supporting cast that includes Hazel Atkins, Ava Corley, Tessa Tomblin, and Natalie Nohrens. With an impressive combination of front-end talent and depth, Shelbyville has all the pieces needed to win a state championship. The biggest question will be whether the Rams can maintain their undefeated record against a Eureka squad that has been equally impressive throughout the season.

Standing directly in Shelbyville's path is Eureka, which has emerged as the other leading contender for the Class 1A crown. After finishing seventh at last year's State Championships, the Hornets have made a significant jump this fall and now find themselves in position to compete for the title. Eureka opened the season with a statement victory at the First to the Finish Invitational and followed that performance with runner-up finishes at the Dunlap and Springfield Invitationals, both behind a talented Glenwood squad. The Hornets also won the Elmwood Invitational before finishing second to Mahomet-Seymour at the Gene Jones Invitational. Since then, Eureka has been outstanding, winning the Heart of Illinois Conference Championships before capturing both regional and sectional titles. The Hornets are led by Ava Otto and Sierra Herrmann, who provide a strong one-two combination at the front. Behind them, Kinsey Stoller, Sophia Watson, Kenna Walder, and Bre Lehman give Eureka tremendous depth through six runners. Eureka may have one of the deepest lineups in Class 1A, and that depth could be the deciding factor in a championship battle where every position matters.

While Shelbyville and Eureka appear to have separated themselves as the leading championship contenders, the battle for the third-place trophy could be just as entertaining. Elmwood enters the weekend looking to improve upon last year's fifth-place finish and has the talent to make that happen. The Trojans have enjoyed a strong fall, winning the Dale Donner Invitational while finishing third at the Elmwood Invitational and second at both the Amboy and Patriot Invitationals. Elmwood features a talented front three led by Mya Hill, Berlyn Schmidgall, and Bristol Schmidgall. All three have the potential to finish near the front of the team scoring, giving Elmwood a significant advantage if they can remain close together. Riley Kelly and Madalyn Ori round out a strong top five that has the potential to compete with nearly anyone in the classification. With a talented group capable of placing multiple runners near the front, Elmwood has a legitimate opportunity to move onto the podium.

Another team looking to return to the podium is El Paso-Gridley, which finished third at last year's State Championships and enters Saturday hoping to repeat that success. The Titans have put together another strong season, highlighted by a victory at their home invitational and runner-up finishes at the Elmwood Invitational and Heart of Illinois Conference Championships. El Paso-Gridley also finished second at both the regional and sectional championships, competing against a powerful Eureka squad. Leading the way is Haven Miller, who gives the Titans a strong presence near the front of the field. Behind Miller, Kiley Knapp, Verity Nowark, Emersyn Harms, and Mya Griffin provide the supporting depth needed to challenge for another trophy. El Paso-Gridley may not have the same overall depth as some of the championship favorites, but the Titans have proven they can compete at a high level and will be looking to deliver their best collective performance of the season when it matters most.

Anna-Jonesboro is another program with its sights set on a podium finish after placing fourth at last year's State Championships. The Wildcats have enjoyed an impressive season, opening with a third-place finish at the First to the Finish Invitational before collecting victories at the Cape Central Invitational and Southern Illinois River-to-River Conference Championships. Anna-Jonesboro has been especially strong during the postseason, winning both the Murphysboro Regional and Sectional championships. The Wildcats are led by Jadyn Gerardi, who has established herself as one of the top runners in the classification. Behind Gerardi, Kelly Smith, Sophia Hill, Kylee Myers, and Melaina Bundren give Anna-Jonesboro a tightly packed scoring group. One of the Wildcats' biggest strengths is their ability to keep their second through fifth runners relatively close together, something that could prove extremely valuable in a crowded State Meet field. After narrowly missing the podium a year ago, Anna-Jonesboro will be looking to take the next step and bring home a trophy.

The biggest wildcard in the trophy race may be defending state champion Winnebago. The Indians have once again put together an outstanding season, finishing second at the First to the Finish Invitational before winning the Amboy Invitational, Big Northern Conference Championships, and both the regional and sectional titles. However, the biggest question surrounding Winnebago entering Saturday is the status of Molly Webb, who has not competed since the conference championships. Webb gives Winnebago a legitimate front-runner capable of finishing among the top individuals in the race, and her availability could have a significant impact on the Indians' chances of returning to the podium. Behind Webb, Winnebago features a talented group that includes Ella Carlson, Avery Dimke, and Svea Glidden, giving the Indians an impressive group of front runners when at full strength. Emma Ward and Kyanna Robinson provide additional depth. If Webb returns and is able to perform near her best, Winnebago has the front-end talent to challenge Elmwood, El Paso-Gridley, and Anna-Jonesboro for the final trophy position. Without her, the defending champions would face a much more difficult path to the podium.

Boys Individual Preview

The race for the IHSA Class 1A Boys Cross Country State Championship could be one of the most wide-open individual battles of the weekend, with several athletes entering Detweiller Park capable of capturing the title. Edgar Garcia of Murphysboro, Eli Anderson of Monticello, Cameron Roedl of Cumberland, Coriell Green of Delavan, and Evan Knobloch of Stark County have all established themselves as legitimate championship contenders throughout the fall. Each brings a different strength into Saturday's race, whether it is Garcia's dominance against Class 1A competition, Anderson's impressive winning streak, Green's elite finishing speed, or Knobloch's experience as the returning state runner-up. With no clear favorite separating himself from the rest of the field, the championship could come down to which athlete executes the best race over the final mile. Behind the leading contenders, a talented collection of returning All-State runners, sectional champions, and emerging underclassmen will battle for the remaining top-ten positions.

One of the most intriguing championship contenders is Edgar Garcia (Sr., Murphysboro), who enters Saturday having not lost to a Class 1A competitor during the 2026 cross country season. Garcia has consistently demonstrated his ability to compete against high-level competition, finishing eighth at the Gans Creek Classic and fourth in the combined Class 1A/2A race at the Peoria Invitational. He has been especially impressive during the postseason, capturing individual titles at both the Murphysboro Regional and Murphysboro Sectional. Despite his success this fall, Garcia has never earned All-State honors at the Cross Country State Championships, making Saturday an opportunity for a major breakthrough. With his undefeated record against Class 1A competition and impressive performances against larger schools, Garcia has established himself as a legitimate contender to capture the individual state championship.

Another athlete who has positioned himself as a leading championship contender is Eli Anderson (Jr., Monticello). Anderson has been nearly unstoppable over the second half of the season, having not lost a race since September 26. The Monticello junior has collected an impressive string of victories, winning the Spartan Classic, Illini Prairie Conference Championships, Patriot Invitational, Sullivan Regional, and Cumberland Sectional. Anderson finished 13th at the 2025 Cross Country State Championships, and his performances this fall suggest he is capable of making a significant jump up the standings. His ability to consistently win races against strong competition has made him one of the hottest runners entering the State Meet. With five major victories during his recent stretch of racing, Anderson will arrive at Detweiller Park with plenty of confidence and a legitimate opportunity to capture the championship.

Cameron Roedl (Sr., Toledo Cumberland) is another athlete who has the talent and experience to challenge for the individual title. Roedl has enjoyed an outstanding senior season, winning the Doc Acklin Invitational and Charleston Invitational before finishing fourth at the First to the Finish Invitational and third at the Spartan Classic. He continued his success during the championship portion of the season, capturing the National Trail Conference title and Cumberland Regional championship before finishing runner-up to Eli Anderson at the Cumberland Sectional. Roedl also brings valuable experience from the track, where he finished eighth in the 3200m at the 2026 State Championships. His ability to compete near the front against some of the classification's best runners makes him a dangerous contender, and Saturday presents an opportunity for Roedl to close out his high school cross country career with an individual state championship.

Few athletes in the field possess the finishing speed of Coriell Green (Sr., Delavan), who could be one of the most dangerous runners in the race if the leading group remains together late. Green is a two-time defending state champion in the 800m, having captured the event at both the 2025 and 2026 State Track and Field Championships. His personal best of 1:50 demonstrates his exceptional middle-distance ability, which could become a major advantage over the closing stages at Detweiller Park. Green has also established himself as one of the top cross country runners in Class 1A, improving from 16th at the 2024 State Championships to eighth in 2025. This fall, he finished second at the Springfield Invitational, fourth at the Elmwood Invitational, and second at the Patriot Invitational before winning both the Williamsville Regional and Elmwood Sectional. With his championship experience, impressive speed, and strong postseason performances, Green has the ability to challenge for the victory.

The most accomplished returning cross country runner among the leading contenders is Evan Knobloch (Jr., Toulon Stark County), who finished runner-up at the 2025 State Championships. Knobloch has experienced an up-and-down 2026 season, but when he has been at his best, he has demonstrated the ability to beat nearly anyone in the classification. He opened the fall with a victory at the First to the Finish Invitational and later finished third at the El Paso-Gridley Invitational before winning the Lincoln Trail Conference Championships. Knobloch has been especially strong during the postseason, capturing individual titles at both the Bureau Valley Regional and Oregon Sectional. He also enjoyed an impressive 2026 track season, finishing second in the 3200m and eighth in the 1600m at the State Championships. Although consistency has been a challenge at times this fall, Knobloch's proven ability to perform at Detweiller Park makes him one of the leading contenders to capture the individual title.

While the championship battle appears to feature five primary contenders, the race for the remaining top-ten positions could be equally competitive. Cole Cahill (So., Elmwood) has established himself as one of the top young distance runners in Class 1A and enters Saturday looking to make a significant impact. Cahill finished second at the Dale Donner Invitational and Prairieland Conference Championships before placing ninth at the Patriot Invitational. He has been especially impressive during the postseason, winning the Eureka Regional before finishing runner-up at the Elmwood Sectional. Cahill also brings experience from the 2026 State Track and Field Championships, where he helped Elmwood finish seventh in the 4x800m relay. With his recent postseason success, Cahill has positioned himself as a legitimate contender for a top-ten finish.

Monticello could have two athletes battling near the front of the race, as Patrick McClure (Fr., Monticello) has quickly established himself as one of the top freshmen in Class 1A. McClure has enjoyed an impressive debut high school cross country season, finishing eighth at both the Spartan Classic and Patriot Invitational before taking third at the Sullivan Regional and Cumberland Sectional. His ability to consistently compete against experienced upperclassmen has been one of the more impressive developments of the fall. With teammate Eli Anderson expected to contend for the individual championship, McClure could provide Monticello with another strong performance near the front of the field. A top-ten finish would be an outstanding accomplishment for the freshman in his first appearance at the State Championships.

Another talented underclassman looking to make a significant jump is Ryan Patrick (So., Williamsville). Patrick enters Saturday with valuable State Meet experience after finishing 21st at the 2025 Cross Country State Championships. The Williamsville sophomore has continued to improve throughout the fall, finishing third at the First to the Finish Invitational and fourth at the Spartan Classic before placing second at the Sangamo Conference Championships. He followed those performances with third-place finishes at both the Williamsville Regional and Elmwood Sectional. Patrick's consistency against strong competition has made him one of the more reliable performers in the classification, and he has an excellent opportunity to improve upon last year's All-State finish and move into the top ten.

Blake Lindberg (Sr., Rockford Christian) will be looking to close out his high school cross country career with another outstanding performance after finishing 25th at the 2025 State Championships. Lindberg has enjoyed a strong senior season, finishing second at the Rocket Run and sixth at the First to the Finish Invitational before winning the Winnebago Regional and finishing runner-up at the Oregon Sectional. He also brings considerable championship experience from the track, having helped Rockford Christian capture back-to-back state titles in the 4x800m relay in 2025 and 2026. Lindberg was also part of a fifth-place finish in the 4x400m at the 2026 State Championships. With his experience competing in championship races and strong performances throughout the fall, Lindberg has the potential to move well inside the top ten.

Few athletes have put together as many impressive regular-season performances as Cayden Bostic (Jr., Clinton). Bostic has enjoyed an outstanding 2026 campaign, winning the Clinton Light It Up Invitational and Tuscola Invitational while finishing second at the Rochester Invitational and Spartan Classic. He also placed eighth at the First to the Finish Invitational and third at the El Paso-Gridley Invitational before capturing the Central Illinois Conference championship. Bostic continued his strong season with a runner-up finish at the Sullivan Regional before placing fourth at the Cumberland Sectional. After finishing 12th at the 2025 Cross Country State Championships, the Clinton junior has positioned himself as one of the leading contenders to move into the top ten. His experience and ability to consistently compete against some of the best runners in the classification make him a serious threat.

One of the most dangerous athletes in the field if the race comes down to a fast finish is Aiden Duhs (Sr., Chillicothe Illinois Valley Central). Duhs has established himself as one of the state's premier middle-distance runners, owning a personal best of 1:51 in the 800m. He finished sixth in the event at the 2025 Class 2A State Track and Field Championships before improving to second in 2026. Duhs has carried that success into the cross country season, finishing second at the Elmwood Invitational before capturing the Seneca Regional championship and placing third at the Oregon Sectional. His combination of speed and improving cross country strength makes him a dangerous competitor, particularly over the closing stages of Saturday's race. If Duhs can remain in contact with the leading group, he has the finishing ability to move into the top ten.

Holden Gerdes (Sr., Fairbury Prairie Central) has been one of the more consistent performers in Class 1A throughout the fall and enters Saturday with plenty of momentum. Gerdes finished ninth at the First to the Finish Invitational and fourth at the Tuscola Invitational before taking second at the Illini Prairie Conference Championships. He has been at his best during the postseason, capturing individual championships at both the McNamara Regional and McNamara Sectional. Gerdes finished 16th at the 2025 Cross Country State Championships, giving him valuable experience competing near the front at Detweiller Park. With two consecutive postseason victories and a strong senior season behind him, Gerdes has the opportunity to improve upon last year's finish and challenge for a top-ten position.

Another returning All-State athlete capable of making a significant impact is Caiden Cook (Sr., DuQuoin). Cook finished ninth at the 2025 Cross Country State Championships and enters Saturday looking to secure another top-ten finish. The DuQuoin senior has enjoyed a strong championship portion of the season, winning the Southern Illinois River-to-River Conference title before finishing runner-up to Edgar Garcia at both the Murphysboro Regional and Murphysboro Sectional. Although Cook has been unable to get past Garcia during the postseason, his consistency and previous State Meet success make him one of the more experienced contenders in the field. With a top-ten finish already on his résumé, Cook has demonstrated that he knows how to perform when the stakes are highest.

Harrison Hays (Sr., Paris) is another athlete who has positioned himself as a potential top-ten contender following an impressive senior campaign. Hays finished second at the Doc Acklin Invitational, third at the Cow Chip Invitational, and second at the Tuscola Invitational before capturing the Tuscola Regional championship. He followed that victory with a fifth-place finish at the Cumberland Sectional, competing against several of the classification's leading runners. Hays has consistently demonstrated the ability to compete near the front throughout the fall, and his postseason performances suggest he could be ready for a breakthrough at Detweiller Park. A top-ten finish would be an outstanding way to close out his high school cross country career.

One of the more intriguing athletes entering Saturday is Adam Perry (So., Eureka), who has shown flashes of outstanding potential throughout the 2026 season. Perry finished second at the Dunlap Invitational before capturing the individual championship at the Elmwood Invitational. He also finished fourth at the Gene Jones Invitational and won the Heart of Illinois Conference Championships, establishing himself as one of the top runners in the classification during the regular season. However, Perry has struggled to replicate those performances during the regional and sectional rounds, leaving some uncertainty about what to expect at the State Meet. His track credentials, including a 9:24 performance in the 3200m during the spring 2026 season, demonstrate that he has the talent to compete with the best runners in the field. If Perry can return to his early-season form, he has the ability to challenge for a top-ten finish.

Boys Team Preview

The battle for the IHSA Class 1A Boys Cross Country State Championship is shaping up to be one of the most competitive team races of the weekend, with Illinois Valley Central and Eureka emerging as the leading contenders for the title. Both programs have enjoyed outstanding 2026 seasons, collecting major invitational victories and sectional championships while demonstrating the depth needed to compete for a state title. However, neither team can afford to overlook a talented group of challengers, as Monticello, Elmwood, East Dubuque, and Clinton have all shown the ability to compete with the classification's best. With several teams featuring strong front runners and tightly packed scoring groups, the difference between bringing home a state championship trophy and leaving Detweiller Park empty-handed could come down to the final scoring positions.

Illinois Valley Central enters Saturday as one of the favorites to capture the Class 1A State Championship after putting together an impressive 2026 campaign. The Grey Ghosts have consistently competed against strong competition throughout the fall, finishing fourth at the First to the Finish Invitational before capturing the Dunlap Invitational championship. They followed that performance with a runner-up finish at the Elmwood Invitational and a victory at the Illini Prairie Conference Championships. Illinois Valley Central also finished third at the Delavan Invitational and fourth at the Patriot Invitational before taking its racing to another level during the postseason. The Grey Ghosts captured both the Seneca Regional and Oregon Sectional championships, giving them plenty of momentum entering the State Meet. Leading the way is Aiden Duhs, one of the state's premier middle-distance runners, who provides Illinois Valley Central with a legitimate front-runner capable of scoring very few points. Alongside Duhs is Jackson Rupiper, giving the Grey Ghosts an outstanding one-two combination near the front. Cullan Fahrenkrug, Colter Hedden, and Brody Miller provide the depth needed to compete for a championship, while Alex Crull gives the team another reliable option. Illinois Valley Central's biggest strength may be its ability to keep its scoring runners relatively close together, something that could prove extremely valuable in a crowded State Meet field. If the Grey Ghosts can deliver another strong collective performance, they have an excellent opportunity to capture the state title.

Standing directly in Illinois Valley Central's path is Eureka, which has established itself as another leading contender for the Class 1A crown. The Hornets have put together an outstanding season, finishing third at the First to the Finish Invitational and second at the Dunlap Invitational before capturing victories at the Springfield and Elmwood Invitationals. Eureka also finished third at the Gene Jones Invitational before winning the Heart of Illinois Conference Championships. The Hornets have continued their success during the postseason, capturing both the Eureka Regional and Elmwood Sectional championships. Leading the charge is Adam Perry, who has demonstrated the ability to compete with the top individual runners in the classification throughout the fall. Behind Perry, Eureka features an impressive supporting cast that includes Davin Dingledine, Hudson Leman, Tate Leman, and Landon Wurmnest. The Hornets' biggest advantage could be their depth, particularly through their third, fourth, and fifth runners, who have the ability to finish close together and limit the team's overall score. Although Perry has not been at his best during the regional and sectional rounds, Eureka has continued to win, demonstrating that the Hornets are capable of succeeding even when their top runner does not deliver his strongest performance. If Perry returns to his early-season form and the rest of the lineup continues its consistent racing, Eureka has all the pieces needed to capture the state championship.

While Illinois Valley Central and Eureka appear to be the leading championship contenders, Monticello has the front-end talent to make a serious run at a trophy. The Sages have enjoyed a strong 2026 season, winning the Cow Chip Classic while finishing fourth at the Clinton Light It Up Invitational, fifth at the First to the Finish Invitational, and second at the Spartan Classic. Monticello also finished runner-up at the Illini Prairie Conference Championships and fifth at the Patriot Invitational before placing second at the Sullivan Regional. The Sages delivered one of their strongest performances of the season at the Cumberland Sectional, capturing the team championship and establishing themselves as a legitimate podium contender. Monticello features one of the most dangerous front-running groups in Class 1A, led by individual championship contender Eli Anderson. Alongside Anderson is talented freshman Patrick McClure, who has quickly emerged as one of the classification's top young runners, while Tim Sikorski gives the Sages another strong presence near the front. The biggest question for Monticello will be the performances of Montgomery Owen and Owen Patton, who will play a critical role in determining how high the Sages can finish. If Monticello's fourth and fifth runners can limit the gap behind their talented front three, the Sages could challenge for a trophy and potentially make things interesting for the championship favorites.

Another team with the talent to compete for a podium position is Elmwood, which has been one of the most consistent programs in Class 1A throughout the fall. The Trojans opened the season with a victory at the Dale Donner Invitational before finishing runner-up at the Amboy Invitational. Elmwood later delivered one of its strongest performances of the season at the Patriot Invitational, capturing the team championship against a competitive field. The Trojans have continued to race well during the postseason, finishing second to Eureka at both the Eureka Regional and Elmwood Sectional. Elmwood features an impressive one-two combination in Cole Cahill and Danny Sharp, who have consistently provided the Trojans with strong performances near the front. Behind them, Cooper Brown, Silas Schmieg, and Danny Ellen give Elmwood a solid scoring group capable of competing with the best teams in the classification. The Trojans' ability to keep their third through fifth runners relatively close together could become a major advantage in a tightly contested State Meet. With a Patriot Invitational championship already on their résumé and consistent performances against Eureka throughout the postseason, Elmwood has demonstrated that it belongs in the trophy conversation.

East Dubuque is another program that has positioned itself as a legitimate trophy contender following an impressive 2026 campaign. The Warriors have enjoyed tremendous success throughout the fall, winning the Rocket Run Invitational before finishing runner-up at the First to the Finish Invitational. East Dubuque followed those performances with victories at the Amboy Invitational and Northwest Upstate Illini Conference Championships before capturing the Winnebago Regional title. The Warriors finished second at the Oregon Sectional, competing against a talented Illinois Valley Central squad, and now enter Detweiller Park with an opportunity to secure a podium finish. East Dubuque features a dangerous front-running combination led by Vinny Gullone and Lucas Jackson, who have the ability to finish near the front of the team scoring. Peter Wagner gives the Warriors another strong runner, while Nicholas Cobine and Ian Tancrell round out the projected scoring lineup. East Dubuque's biggest challenge will be limiting the gap between its front three and final two scoring runners. If the Warriors can get strong performances from their fourth and fifth runners, they have the potential to challenge Monticello and Elmwood for a trophy.

Perhaps the most intriguing team in the trophy conversation is Clinton, which has shown the ability to beat nearly anyone in Class 1A when firing on all cylinders. The Maroons have enjoyed an outstanding 2026 season, finishing third at their home Clinton Light It Up Invitational before capturing the team championship at the First to the Finish Invitational. Clinton continued its success with victories at the Spartan Classic, Delavan Invitational, and El Paso-Gridley Invitational, establishing itself as one of the classification's premier programs. The Maroons also won the Sullivan Regional before finishing runner-up to Monticello at the Cumberland Sectional. Clinton is led by Cayden Bostic, one of the top individual runners in Class 1A, who gives the Maroons a legitimate front-runner capable of finishing near the top of the field. Behind Bostic, Brockton Sumner provides a strong second runner, while Justin Droke, Gavin Klein, and Joe Tayor give Clinton the depth needed to compete for a podium position. One of Clinton's biggest strengths is the ability of its third through fifth runners to finish close together, which could prove extremely valuable in the team standings. Although the Maroons finished second at sectionals, their collection of major invitational victories demonstrates that they have the talent to challenge anyone in the field. If Clinton can replicate its best performances from earlier in the season, the Maroons could be one of the most dangerous teams at Detweiller Park.
