Class 1A has consistently produced some of Illinois' most exciting distance runners, and the 2026 season looks no different. With returning All-State finishers, state qualifiers, and a talented group of emerging underclassmen, the battle for individual honors should be one of the highlights of the fall. Our preseason rankings recognize the top 25 athletes entering the 2026 cross country season based solely on performances achieved prior to July 1st, 2026, meaning any races or results after that date were not considered in the evaluation. While these rankings reflect each athlete's body of work heading into the season, every race this fall will provide an opportunity for runners to climb the rankings and establish themselves among the state's best.

Although his finish at Detweiller did not reflect the level he would later reach, the progress he made throughout the spring suggests he is capable of a major breakthrough this fall. Sikorski enjoyed an outstanding track campaign, lowering his personal bests to 4:26.08 in the 1600 meters and 9:53.96 in the 3200 meters. He qualified for the IHSA Class 2A State Meet in the 1600 meters, gaining valuable championship experience against one of the state's deepest fields. His dramatic improvement over the past year has positioned him as one of the biggest sleepers in Class 1A. If he can carry his track fitness onto the cross country course, Sikorski has the potential to make a substantial climb in the state rankings and contend for All State honors this season.
